There are times when we find ourselves in a haze—like we have left reality behind and get caught in our own worlds, light-years away from home. This is what the “Absent” series strives to illustrate. Each photograph depicts a different situation in which a person may find themselves in a daze—completely detached from the world. I’ve symbolized this feeling by removing all exposed body parts, leaving only the form of the body created by the clothing.
All of the specific moments shown in the photographs are ones where I have found either myself or other people in a mindless, auto-pilot state. We often simply go through the motions of every-day things instead of stopping, seeing, and experiencing them. Today’s society is too busy to focus on what is happening in that current moment. Most people would rather think about what they have to do later that day than simply take in the world around them. If everyone would just “stop and smell the roses,” it would make life so much more enjoyable.
